| December 1, 2011 PRINCE GEORGE – Two Northern B.C. mines were recognized for outstanding achievements in reclamation, cementing B.C.’s reputation as a leader in sustainable resource development and environmental protection. The British Columbia Jake McDonald Annual Mine Reclamation Award was presented to Northgate Minerals Corporation for outstanding reclamation achievements at the Kemess South Mine. The company is commended for implementing a comprehensive reclamation program with demonstrated success. Two hundred and fifty hectares, of approximately 600 disturbed, are in the final stages of reclamation. Activities have included decommissioning of mine infrastructure, re-grading and re-sloping surfaces into adjacent landforms, controlling drainage, applying growth medium, and using native species for re-vegetation. Reclamation activities are continuing at the site, which ended mine production in March 2011. Thompson Creek Mining Ltd.’s Endako Mine was awarded for excellent reclamation in the category of metal mining. Reclamation work at this site shows impressive re-vegetation results on parts of the tailings management facilities. The dedication of reclamation program staff is playing a key role in the success of this reclamation program. Why this matters:
Quotes: “When companies take steps towards making mining more environmentally friendly it makes them industry leaders and hopefully inspires others to follow. I’m pleased these two companies are being recognized for their efforts to revitalize the land around the mines they run.” “These are both great examples of mining companies doing great work while being socially responsible. I congratulate Northgate Minerals and Thomson Creek Mining for being recognized and hope other companies will look to them as a good example.” “While most British Columbians recognize that a vibrant mining sector is critical to a strong economy, they also want assurance that mines are operated in an environmentally conscious way. These awards recognize two companies that understand that and demonstrate it in their daily operations.” “Reclamation is a critical part of the mining cycle and a requirement for all mine and mineral exploration sites in British Columbia. The ability to complete sustainable reclamation is an important part of the mine planning process and it is great to see these sites setting an example for solid reclamation practices.” -30- | |
